Traditionally, the retirement age was 62 and workers looked forward to receiving benefits from a pension but more and more, so-called older workers are staying on the job on Labor Day (and other holidays) and are continuing to seek new employment.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that the rank of workers over the age of 65 since 2001 has swelled by 58%. Now there are more than six million workers age 65 and older, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These folks come from the ranks of the Baby Boomers who were born after World War II, partially explaining why there are so many people in this age group. Unfortunately with high unemployment and an inability to sell their homes, the number of seniors who continue to work is high. Many thought they could rely on the value of their home to take them through retirement, but with the market dropping, that guarantee is diminished. And seniors are less likely to find reemployment after they have lost their job, according to a report released by Florida International University. Sixty percent of seniors who are out of work are unemployed for six months or longer compared to 38 percent for younger workers.

The Sun-Sentinel reports there are many businesses that value older workers including
Home Depot, CVS, Walgreens, Toys R Us / Babies R Us, and Staples among others.

Florida Workers’ Compensation
These businesses will offer, in some cases, benefits and in all cases workers’ compensation to employees who are injured on the job. That is one benefit that has not been eroded so far and it is an important one to compensate you for medical costs and lost wages if you are injured in the workplace or during the scope of your job. Farah & Farah will advocate for you if the insurance provider for your employer does not offer you enough in compensation to cover your bills and lost wages.
